Three miniature Common snipe sharing a muddy ‘wood-slice’ water’s edge, with detailed plumage, tiny green legs and long probing beaks! These have to be my favourite ever to-scale tiny birds!
The Long Rock is my patch for birdwatching down by the beach. I go there as often as I can on my trusty bright yellow e-bike, taking anyone who fancies some bird-watching with me. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as it attracts such wonderful birds and wildlife there all year round.
In March this year I watched 3 snipe appear as if by magic, as my eyes began to pick their camouflaged plumage out from the mud and reeds. They moved as if in a group aware of each other and stayed out in the open for several minutes calmly eating their fill.
Displayed in a variety of natural poses, the snipe keep a look out, preen or plunge their beaks into the mud searching for invertebrates. This animated group of snipe look wonderful on a shelf or desk, kept out of harms-way but in indirect sunlight to show off the wonderful warm browns and russets of their plumage. Snipe have gorgeous green wader legs with three long toes, perfect for wading at the edge of water and to hide in the waterlogged, marshy reeds.
This would be a special gift for any keen bird watcher or enthusiast who knows their wading birds and is interested in plumage details.
