Needle felt wool birds must be kept away from water – except when they are a robin in the bird bath!
One of a pair of robins that started visiting our neighbouring gardens this spring, this life-size robin is still wet from washing his feathers. He has a drop of water hanging from his beak, droplets on his back and drips on his tail too. Sculpted in wool and plant fibres, the water drops are made of resin and his feathers are all fluffed as he has hunches down into the water and shakes his plumage with a spin, to feel refreshed, cool and clean.
It was a real challenge, capturing the movement and dishevelled appearance of this robin but I wanted to recreate this loving pair of birds - one standing guard whilst the other has their wash. It would be wonderful if they stayed together as a pair, though they do stand-alone as individual art pieces too. Since finishing them both, I have kept them on a shelf in my living room where the light catches the shine from the drops of water. They have been much admired and without a doubt have enjoyed all the attention!
